HIMSS 2013 New Orleans: Avnet, partners set up shop

Avnet has a big presence at HIMSS 2013 New Orleans, showcasing services, hardware and software along with eight of its partners.

In its biggest exhibit at the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition to date, Avnet Technology Solutions and eight of its partners in health care are showcasing services, software and hardware offerings that address the in-person or online patient experience.

In a 20-foot-by-50-foot booth at the HIMSS 2013 conference taking place this week in New Orleans, Avnet -- along with health care partners Analytic Partners, Insight, Logicalis Group, MEDfx Corp., Perficient Inc., Polycom Inc., Solutions II and Vital -- is displaying four solutions: its Healthcare Provider Portal, Avnet's OneVoice Solutions, Healthcare Information Exchange and Enterprise Healthcare Analytics Solutions, and Vendor Neutral Archive.

"This showcase is an opportunity for our health care partners to have conversations with vendors, suppliers and end users, and to learn more about complex health care solutions such as business intelligence, health care analytics and mobility, as well as [about] legacy technology such as storage, servers, networking and data center -- which are still a big part of the conversation in health care today," said Jim Bindon, director of vertical markets for Avnet.

With a reported total attendance of 33,500 at HIMSS on Tuesday, the event is a major health care networking event for the distributor's partners and their invited prospective customers.

Here are more details on what attendees will see at the Avnet-partner exhibit:

  • The Avnet Healthcare Provider Portal, a system that connects patients, caregivers and insurance companies to vital health care, medical and insurance information via the Web or mobile access.
  • Avnet's OneVoice Solutions, based on IBM Cross Channel Integration Technology, a multichannel -- email, text messaging and voice -- communication solution with which health care organizations can communicate with their patient community.
  • Healthcare Information Exchange and Enterprise Healthcare Analytics Solutions, based on IBM and Oracle technology, which help small and medium-sized hospitals solve business challenges related to accountable care, electronic health records , or EHRs, and health information exchanges, or HIEs.
  • Vendor Neutral Archive, or VNA, which provides health care institutions with scalable image and information life-cycle management solutions for storage and retrieval from such companies as IBM, HP, NetApp and EMC.

With IT-related health care spending pegged at $34 billion in 2012, according to IDC, Bindon sees a huge revenue opportunity for channel partners, particularly in three areas: software; legacy systems such as infrastructure for disaster recovery, data center optimization and virtualization; and newer technology areas, such as mobility, health care analytics, health care information exchanges and portal technology.

Seven years ago, Avnet launched its health care vertical business with a handful of partners. Today, the distributor has 500 partners providing health care solutions of one type or another, according to Bindon, and offers training through its HealthPath University.

Training at HealthPath University consists of a three-day curriculum introducing partners to the industry. A weeklong internship program is also available at Scottsdale Healthcare for partners to learn about the challenges, systems and day-to-day needs of health care organizations. Avnet also offers customized workshops for partners on specific solutions.

Health care is considered a high-growth vertical, and the distributor has trained 1,500 partner reps in its HealthPath University since its launch in 2006.
