Today's headlines: SonicWALL taps D&H; open source development in the cloud.

SonicWALL signs D&H

SonicWALL Inc. this week signed D&H Distributing Co. as a distribution partner. That gives SonicWALL access to D&H-affiliated VARs in North America and provides those partners with access to the vendor's network security, secure content management, backup and recovery software and Internet security appliances.

Open source developers take to the cloud

New research shows that 40% of developers working on open source projects plan to offer their finished products as cloud-based services. The newly released Evans Data Open Source Development Survey of 360 open source developers reports that 28% of those surveyed plan to use Google App Engine while 15% plan to use Amazon's services. That leaves Microsoft, IBM and -- all of which offer cloud infrastructure -- scrambling for mind- and market-share.

Other findings: 52% of those surveyed use Linux in virtualized environments; MySQL is the open source database of choice for more than half of those surveyed in at least some projects.

SAP: Retail customers can get more out of existing apps

With the economy's continuing slump, many companies will try to wring more value from their existing SAP applications and SAP will help them do just that, said Isaac Krakovsky, vice president of SAP Retail Inc. Krakovsky sat down with at this year's National Retail Federation Convention and Expo to talk about the biggest IT challenges facing retailers in 2009 and how SAP plans to help them get through the recession.
