Surprise! Cisco UCS hits bigger in smaller companies

CIsco may have pitched its Unified Computing System (UCS) to the biggest of enterprises but smaller companies–typically mid-market players just dipping their toes into server virtualization –are the ones that are actually buying the converged hardware.

Alex Barrett at SearchServerVirtualization reports that smaller companies may have deferred server virtualization and now that they’re making the plunge this hardware may be the perfect complement to their efforts.

And, face it: Big companies require a whole lotta sign off for big hardware purchases.’s Mark Fontecchio talked to several IT pros at Gartner’s data center show this week and they’re not diving into the UCS pool just yet, vendor hype notwithstanding. Big IT buyers at big IT shops have a lot of internal constituents to please before taking the plunge into UCS. The whole concept, after all, is relatively new. Cisco kicked it off last April with HP diving in soon thereafter.

In this case, mid-market companies–those served by VARs–are blazing the trail.
