Sun VARs get (temporary) reprieve from Oracle

Sun VARs have been given another two weeks aboard the Oracle partner program to close deals before losing their ability to do so.

Oracle had designated October 15 as the end of the Sun Partner Advantage (SPA) Program. Now that date has been pushed back to November 1, several Sun VARs said.

The deadline was set to get Sun partners that wanted to keep selling Sun hardware/software to requalify under the Oracle Partner Network (OPN). In practice, that meant that they could not sell Sun product after October 15 unless they’d done their homework.

Late last week, Oracle told them to keep on selling till November 1. (October 15 was also the date at which many Sun partners had to stop selling hardware renewals.)

Sun VARs said they don’t read too much into this other than that Oracle “couldn’t get it’s @#$!! together.”

Given the way many of these resellers view Oracle’s channel program and practices, they’re not exactly thrilled about joining OPN. But, some will do so to keep their options open while also bulking up their Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and HDS portfolios.
