Solution provider turns state representative

Now, this is a case of an entrepreneur taking matters into his own hands.

Frustrated by the local economy in Kansas, Data Technique founder and CEO Terry Calloway ran earlier this month for the house of representatives in his home state, and won. It was a close race — a gap of just 155 votes for his seat in the third district of Kansas in Pittsburg, Kan. — but now Calloway is getting ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work in Topeka, Kan. Full disclosure: I know about what Terry is doing because I have consulted by Data Technique this year with some of its messaging around cloud computing solutions.

Here’s where he stands on the most important issues for his state. I don’t mean for this to be a particularly political blog, so I’ll let you read for yourself.

But here’s one for you to think about: Calloway cites his more than two decades of experience running a solution provider business as one of his most important qualifications for his new job:

“As the owner of a successful small business for over 20 years, I have been bringing work from businesses and school districts all over the country to be performed by employees in Pittsburg. I have learned how to deal with the ups and downs of the economy and weather the storm when revenues fall short of projections. I have a strong, proven background in creating jobs, balancing budgets, and eliminating inefficiencies.”

So, next time you’re inclined to complain about your lot, think about Terry Calloway and ask yourself how much you are doing to help the business climate in your home state. I’m not suggesting that you all run for public office, but you really can’t complain about your fate if you’re doing nothing to affect it.
