Forrester: Growing opp in energy management software

Forrester Research’s latest survey on green IT trends (its seventh) highlights a big jump in the number of businesses that are planning to invest in some sort of software or solution for tracking their carbon footprint or energy consumption.

According to the firm’s “Market Update: The State of Green IT Adoption, Q2 2010,” 45 percent of IT professionals at global enterprises and SMBs are planning (or already have) some sort of enterprise carbon and energy management system. That’s a 20 percent leap from the last survey, conducted in November 2009.

The survey also reveals that roughly 60 percent of all companies now include environmental criteria (green manufacturing, operations and/or disposal considerations) in their evaluation and selection of IT. That’s up slightly (3 percent) from November 2009. The top motivations for pursuing a green IT strategy remain the following:

  1. Reduce energy-related operating expenses
  2. Reduce other IT operating expenses
  3. Improve the company’s brand image with consumers and the public
