Another trade show bites the dust

Novell has canceled BrainShare 2009, its long-running customer and partner conference.

BrainShare 2009 was scheduled for March in Salt Lake City. John Dragoon, Novell’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said the company canceled the show because of the recession.

“Many of you have indicated that because of the current economic climate, you are under increasing pressure to reduce travel and other controllable expenses and are hesitant to commit to attending our BrainShare 2009 conference,” he wrote in an open letter to customers and partners.

Novell has held BrainShare for more than 20 years, making it one of the longest-running shows hit by the poor economy. In October, NetApp canceled what was to be its first annual user conference, NetApp Accelerate 2009, citing widespread cuts in corporate travel. And last month Cisco Systems called off its annual sales meetings as part of a plan to cut $1 billion in corporate spending.
