Exploring remote access VPN point-to-point tunneling solutions

This expert response will help you decide between L2TP, PPTP and IPsec when recommending a secure solution for point-to-point tunnelling over your customer's virtual private network.

I am trying to help a customer implement a virtual private network for remote access. In one office they have Cisco 3015 and in another they have Cisco 3002. What should I suggest for a point-to-point tunneling solution? L2TP and PPTP? IPsec?

Because you mention the Cisco 3002, a VPN hardware client, I assume your customer wants to connect the two offices with a VPN. Your best choice is almost certainly IPsec. It will transparently connect the two offices and carry any IP-based protocol. PPTP is a deprecated technology and not very secure; it should never be used when serious VPN security is needed.
