IT products news in brief for Nov. 13, 2009

Tech Data launches Symantec solutions center

At its tenth annual TechSelect Conference this week, Tech Data talked up a healthcare specialized business unit (SBU) to help VARs take advantage of higher spending on healthcare IT.

Tech Data referenced recent Gartner Inc. estimates that $81 billion will be spent on healthcare-related IT next year. That's big money and healthcare IT is a big focus for all of the major tech distributors, each of which is trying to convince VARs that they have the best resources for tracking and capturing some of those dollars.

Barb Miller, vice president of government, technical and integration services at Tech Data, will lead this SBU. "While [electronic medical records] has gotten a lot of attention and will be a significant revenue opportunity for the channel, we are taking the broad view of healthcare IT," Miller said in a statement.

The new SBU is working with product marketing and technical services divisions to develop healthcare IT solutions in data center optimization, mobility, network security, content management, digital signage and physical security.

And that's not all from Tech Data

The broadline IT distributor also launched a new Symantec Solutions Center that aims to help VARs train employees and customers on Symantec's security and data-protection products.

Technology aside, one goal for the center is to help VARs build profitable practices around security, systems management, storage and business continuity, said Stacy Nethercoat, Tech Data's vice president of software product marketing.

Covered solutions include the company's Symantec Endpoint Protection, Backup Exec, Enterprise Vault and Data Loss Prevention products, plus Veritas NetBackup and Altiris Client Management Suite.

HP-3Com shows continued IT vendor and product consolidation

IT pros say Hewlett-Packard Co.'s surprise decision to buy 3Com continues vendor consolidation in the IT industry, which may be a good -- and a bad -- thing.

It could provide economies of scale and greater integration of IT gear. On the other hand, it consolidates more IT firepower in fewer vendors' hands, and that may not be advantageous for IT customer trying to negotiate the best prices and licenses, according to SearchDataCenter.com.
