IT channel news in brief for Nov. 2, 2009

Juniper to Cisco: 'Hey, it's on'

Juniper Networks pulled out all the stops last week, taking over the New York Stock Exchange to wine and dine reporters and analysts -- oh, and also to lay out an ambitious lineup of "super-speed" chipsets, a new-look Junos OS and a partnership with Blade Networks to create blade switches running Juno OS.

And that's not all: Juniper and IBM expanded an OEM deal whereby IBM will now sell Juniper's SRX line. And, Dell will sell Juniper's networking gear (much like Dell already does with Brocade) and the two companies will deploy a common OS (JUNOS) and management platform.

All of these moves add up to an escalation of Juniper's response to Cisco's networking hardware dominance and to Cisco's new-found ardor for the data center.

First vSphere update expected soon

VMware plans to release the first update to vSphere 4 within weeks, according to admins who have been briefed. VSphere 4 debuted in May.

VMware would not comment, but administrators hope that Windows 7 support will be among the additions. Administrators would like to be able to run Windows 7 as a guest and use Windows 7 as the underlying OS for the vSphere Client, the management interface (formerly known as the VIC) that VMware admins spend much of their time working in, according to SearchServerVirualization.com.

New Ubuntu responds to user beefs

Canonical said its new Ubuntu desktop release 9.10 is more user friendly and stripped of minor irritants of past releases such as inconsistent naming and badly organized application choices. Canonical said it listened to input made by users to its One Hundred Paper Cuts initiative to make fixes -- large and small. The release was available last week.
