SCO ousts CEO Darl McBride

The SCO Group, already struggling with bankruptcy, cut its CEO and even the CEO title, according to recent SEC filings. That means Darl McBride, the executive who was the public face of the company's controversial legal wrangling, is gone.

Six years ago, SCO charged that IBM had turned Unix code over to the Linux community. The case was seen as an attempt by SCO to assert that Linux used misappropriated proprietary Unix code.

Ubuntu gets cloud religion

Canonical's new Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala release promises to fully support what Canonical calls the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC.)

Many users are thrilled that UEC, an open source cloud computing environment, is supported but also lament that the new server release, due Oct. 29, won't include much to improve configuration management, according to SearchEnterpriseLinux.com.

Microsoft promises user-customizable SharePoint 2010

Microsoft execs said the company will make it easier for users to program their own SharePoint 2010 apps and is improving hosted SharePoint. At the SharePoint Conference 2009, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talked up features of the upcoming SharePoint 2010 release, including the addition of the Office 2010 ribbon interface and better integration with other Office applications.

SharePoint 2010 is set to go to beta next month, according to SearchWinIT.com.
