IT channel news in brief for Oct. 15, 2009

Avaya hones channel programs

The new Avaya Connect channel program aims to simplify all partner-vendor interactions. Four channel programs based on global geography were melded into one and 450 product pricing groups converged to five. Four regional price lists were winnowed down to one. You get the picture.

Partner investment in training and certification will also get easier with Avaya collapsing certification levels from six to four and consolidating the 100 partner courses to down to 15.

"We're going to reduce the amount of time it takes them to get through training by about 50%, and the cost to get through that training will be reduced by 50%," Barat Dickman, director of channel programs at Avaya told SearchNetworkingChannel.com.

SAP, HP team to boost NetWeaver performance

SAP is working with HP to boost the performance and scalability of NetWeaver Business Information Warehouse.

NetWeaver BW will run atop HP's Neoview data warehouse, which flaunts a massively parallel processing (MPP) shared-nothing architecture that handles huge volumes of data and users.

Neoview should boost the amount of data BW can process, Franz Aman, vice president of intelligence platform product marketing for SAP's Business Objects division told SearchDataManagement.com.

Oracle shops not wild about cloud

Oracle shops may find cloud computing intriguing but they're not about to jump in. One Oracle OpenWorld 2009 session detailed the nicety of running Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, which promises 10 million transactions a day for less than $20.

That might sound cool, but few Oracle users at the show seemed ready for cloud-based databases, according to SearchCloudComputing.com.

Steven Winter, a senior database engineer at Gracenote Inc., said the company's database is the core of its business and will never run on anyone else's infrastructure.
