September was a big month of tech vendors buying up IT services capabilities, so it's no surprise that news of Dell's planned acquisition of Perot Systems was the most-read IT channel news story for the month. By far. Channel readers are obsessed with Dell news in general, of course, so that was an added bonus.
Here's the September tally of the most-read IT channel news stories.

1. Dell acquisition of Perot Systems spurs channel conflict fears
Dell, a hardware vendor not particularly noted for its services expertise, upped the ante this month by announcing plans to buy Perot Systems for $3.9 billion. VARs say the deal is a reaction to HP's previous buyout of Electronic Data Systems.

2. As VMware and Microsoft square off, Citrix VARs hang tough
VMware remains the undisputed virtualization kingpin, but Microsoft is coming up fast with a Hyper-V R2 marketing blitz. How can Citrix and its loyal VARs compete with those two giants?

3. Unified computing systems integrate more data center hardware
New HP ProCurve Blade Switches plug into the same enclosure as the company's BladeSystem servers. HP, like Cisco Systems, is putting more disparate gear into fewer boxes, assuming integration work that used to belong to VARs and systems integrators.

4. VARs still waiting for IT stimulus dollars
Nothing would spell relief for recession-afflicted solution providers like a few billion federal IT stimulus dollars. Unfortunately, only a tiny percentage of that money has started to flow.

5: VMware to ride Intel system builder channel
Current Intel system builders can now more easily bundle VMware's latest vSphere virtualization with their built-to-order servers.
