Xerox to buy services company

Xerox is buying Affiliated Computer Services in a $6.4 billion cash-and-stock deal.

That purchase price values Affiliated Computer Services Inc.'s (ACS) shares at $63.11 per share, a 34% premium over the per-share price at Friday's market close. The acquisition would triple Xerox Corp.'s services revenue to an estimated $10 billion next year. Dallas-based ACS bills itself as a specialist in business process outsourcing.

From its roots in office copiers, Xerox is now a leader in higher-tech document management.

This is just the latest of several blockbuster deals in which tech vendors are snapping up services capabilities. Last week, Dell Inc. announced plans to buy Perot Systems. That deal was viewed as a response to Hewlett-Packard's purchase last year of Electronic Data Systems Corp.

Oracle DBAs valued

The value of Oracle database skills may not be recession proof, but it comes close, according to SearchOracle.com.

Database administrators working on the operational side of database sites averaged just south of $96,000 per year in base salary, according to the 2009 Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) Salary Survey, conducted with Unisphere Research. And, 44% of Oracle database professionals got some kind of bonus over the past year with the average being $7,566, bringing overall payout to more than $100,000. Not too shabby.
