Dell to buy Perot Systems

PC giant Dell is buying its way into more IT services with plans to purchase Perot Systems. The $3.9 billion, $30 per share cash deal was announced Monday morning. It is expected to close in Dell's November-January quarter.

Dell, in Round Rock, Texas, built its business selling standard PCs -- and then other related gear -- to customers direct, bypassing traditional channels. In later years it has moved to incorporate VARs into its game plan with mixed results. An estimated 80% of Dell's PC sales go to business users.

Plans call for Plano, Texas-based Perot to become Dell's services unit led by Peter Altabef, who is the current CEO of Perot Systems. Dell directors are expected to consider Ross Perot Jr., Perot Systems' chairman of the board, for appointment to the Dell board, according to a statement on Dell's website.

Xen vs. KVM: Battle of the VMs

Industry analysts assess dueling Xen and KVM hypervisors and find some strong points for each. The consensus is that KVM is not as mature as crowd favorite Xen, but it's catching up. KVM is lighter weight and tends to include the latest-and-greatest drivers, according to SearchDataCenter.com.
