Quantum prez to EMC: It's on

Quantum stood by while EMC and NetApp battled it out for Data Domain, but it's now going into data deduplication with vigor, according to Quantum Corp. CEO Rick Belluzzo.

Belluzzo told SearchDataBackup.com that Quantum is working on a new midrange network-attached storage (NAS) dedupe system and courting new storage OEMs and channel partners left behind by Data Domain. Quantum is ready to take on EMC-Data Domain head to head, he said.

Black Hatters hear about, don't see Mac OS X rootkit

Security experts at Black Hat USA 2009 this week heard all about Dino Dai Zovi's Machiavelli Mac OS X rootkit, but they never got to see it in action.

The rootkit burrows into OS X's kernel roots, as explained by Zovi, the chief scientist with Endgame Systems LLC. But Zovi's machine rebooted and he never got a chance to demonstrate the code to an assembly of Mac fanboys at the annual show, according to SearchSecurity.com.

SAP bolsters Business ByDesign

The troubled SAP Business ByDesign-hosted ERP got reinforcements this week when SAP released Feature Pack 2.0. The update adds integration to SAP's BusinessObjects analytics tools, including the popular Crystal Reports. Also included is new integration with CRM functions such as order-to-cash with automated billing and time and expense reimbursement features. The pack also tightens ties to Microsoft Outlook and Office tools, SAP said. Business ByDesign focuses on midmarket companies but has seen slow take-up.
