Win 7 rush crashes Microsoft store

Microsoft's online EMEA Microsoft Store collapsed Wednesday because of a rush of Windows 7 pre-orders. The website, back online by the next day, "experienced an outage" yesterday during a discount pre-order sale, the company said Thursday.

Amazon U.K. reported that more copies of Windows 7 were pre-ordered in its first eight hours than Windows Vista sold in its entire 17-week pre-order period. As of Thursday afternoon, Amazon U.K.'s three top-selling software products were Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium E, Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, and the Home Edition, respectively.

Microsoft expects 80% of IT pros to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next 36 months, and 50% of IT decision makers plan to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as it is available, according to company speakers at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference on Monday.

Avnet picks up Data Domain

Avnet Technology Solutions has picked up the Data Domain inline deduplication storage product line, strengthening the distributor's StoragePath practice. The distribution agreement gives Avnet resellers in the U.S. and Canada rights to sell Data Domains' products. Data Domain has stirred up quite a kerfuffle in the industry of late: EMC Corp. and NetApp are trying to outbid each other for the right to purchase the company.
