Feds ask Oracle for more Sun merger information

The U.S. Department of Justice has asked Oracle Corp. for more information about its impending $7.4 billion buyout of Sun Microsystems. The government's 30-day preview period was set to end Friday night but the government issued its request instead, according to an Oracle statement. Sun shareholders are set to vote on the move, already approved by Sun's board, on July 16.

The Oracle statement, attributed to attorney Dan Wall, said the government is focusing on "one narrow issue about the way rights to Java are licensed that is never going to get in the way of the deal."

Some Oracle watchers in the channel expected the European regulators to throw up hurdles to the deal, but were not expecting more U.S. scrutiny.

Midmarket CIOs plan new storage initiatives for upcoming year

Recession woes aside, the number of midmarket companies planning new storage implementations doubled over last year, according to a new survey.

The Arrow Enterprise Computer Solutions (ECS) Midmarket Group found that 77% of the 200 U.S. CIOs and decision makers surveyed at midmarket companies said cost reductions were their top priority. However, slightly more than half (51%) said storage was among their top initiatives for next year compared to 26% last year.

Echo Research conducted the Arrow ECS second annual midmarket survey. Data management, including disaster recovery and email archiving, was also frequently cited as an IT priority over the next year, according to SearchStorage.com.
