IT channel news in brief for June 24 2009

HP to consult on cloud computing

Hewlett-Packard talked up new services designed to push cloud adoption among enterprise IT departments. The HP Cloud Discovery Workshop and HP Cloud Roadmap Service aim to show customers how cloud computing works and then help them adopt it using -- no surprise here -- HP products, according to SearchCloudComputing.com.

HP said that although interest in the cloud is high, adoption of standard cloud computing technologies such as data center virtualization and self-service remains low.

Pre-Oracle Sun forges ahead with HPC servers

Sun Microsystems is previewing several HPC products at the International Supercomputing Conference this week. The products are due in the second half of 2009, by which time Sun presumably will be part of Oracle.

Even as some Sun watchers think Oracle will sell off Sun's hardware business, Sun this week said it is expanding its Constellation System with Sun Datacenter 648 InfiniBand quad-data rate QDR switch. Sun said it packs three times the ports per rack (648 ports in all) and also has 4.5 times more system bandwidth compared to competitive double data rate (DDR) switches.

The company also updated its Sun HPC Software, Linux Edition 2.0 and added features in an updated version of its open source file system Lustre (1.8.0), according to SearchDataCenter.com.

IBM packs Zend PHP into Smart Business packages

Zend Technologies' PHP stack will be included with IBM Smart Business systems to help VARs and their customers more easily build PHP-based Web applications. IBM and Zend were already tight -- IBM bundles Zend on Linux and x86 hardware as well as IBM i OS and Power Systems hardware.

Smart Business services bundle up IBM hardware and software, along with third-party software in an appliance-like package. The Zend PHP that is incorporated in the offerings will be automatically updated over the Web.
