IT channel news in brief for June 23, 2009

Pranah launches multi-protocol storage system

Pranah Storage Technologies this week will launch multi-protocol storage systems for small and medium-sized businesses in the video production and digital imaging markets.

The newcomer's systems will support Fibre Channel, iSCSI and network-attached storage in the same box, with prices starting at less than $20,000, according to SearchStorageChannel.com. Pranah CEO Steve Carter said there is an opportunity on the low end, poor economy aside, especially among Apple customers seeking networked storage.

SaaS player shutters

LucidEra will shut down by month's end, a company executive confirmed. LucidEra Inc. billed itself as a pioneer business intelligence Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) vendor.

The company told customers the news last Thursday. Darren Cunningham, vice president of marketing at LucidEra, told SearchDataManagement.com that the company will help them wind down their relationships by the end of June.

Cunningham cited a lack of funding -- not a lack of interest in the services -- as the reason for the closure.

CA buys Cassatt for cloud expertise

CA recently snapped up Cassatt, a struggling cloud technology company. Cassatt Corp.'s data center automation technology and CA Inc.'s governance, monitoring and management applications could make CA a player in the fledgling private cloud market, analysts said.

Terms were not disclosed, but Brenon Daly, analyst at 451 Group, said CA probably paid less than $10 million. Since its founding in 2003, Cassat received $100 million in capital from Warburg Pincus LLC and $15 million from New Enterprise Associates, according to SearchCloudComputing.com.
