Wookey talks next-gen SAP on demand

Large enterprises will be able to get on-demand line-of-business applications that tie into SAP Business Suite deployments, an SAP exec said yesterday.

There are two big changes to SAP's latest on-demand strategy, according to SearchSAP.com. First, the applications are geared for Business Suite customers who will use them to add functionality to their existing SAP ERP or SCM systems. The on-demand applications will run with all versions of Business Suite back to R/3 4.6c.

Second, SAP will host the applications using a multi-tenant architecture, moving away from the isolated tenant model it is still trying to make work for Business ByDesign, its on-demand ERP suite. This model will enable SAP to sell the new on-demand software at a reasonable price to customers, while still making a profit, said John Wookey, the executive vice president who leads SAP's on-demand push.

New HP server aims for the clouds

Hewlett-Packard's new Proliant SL server will take on scale-out applications that will prevail in cloud computing and Web 2.0 deployments.

The new systems, announced Wednesday, are part of HP's ExSO portfolio and are basically stripped down rack servers -- server nodes sit in a lightweight rail and trays take up less space and can be changed quickly, according to SearchDataCenter.com.
