EMC throws hat in the ring for Data Domain
EMC trumped NetApp's $1.5 billion bid to buy Data Domain with its own $1.8 billion offer. The auction shows just how important data deduplication has become, according to SearchDataBackup.com.
NetApp made its offer two weeks ago, and EMC Corp. countered on Monday. Should EMC prevail, Data Domain Corp., plus its buyout of Avamar in 2006 would give it two dedupe pioneers for under $2 billion. EMC CEO Joe Tucci said his goal is to corner the dedupe market by gaining both Data Domain's appliance-based centralized backup along with Avamar's remote backup capabilities.
Intel's Moblin spices up netbook OS race
Intel's plan to enter the netbook operating system foray with Linux-based Moblin, gives IT pros another non-Windows option for these small form factor devices.
Corporate interest in netbooks, already a hot consumer segment, is rising. Whether or not IT pros will consider something other than Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter Edition for their machines depends on how tightly they're locked into Microsoft's stack, according to SearchEnterpriseDesktop.com. IDC said 10 million netbooks sold in 2008 and expects that number to double this year.
SAP will track your stimulus dough
SAP claims its new software will help recipients of federal stimulus money comply with government-mandated reporting requirements, according to SearchSAP.com
The package, which can be deployed by non-SAP and SAP customers, includes special dashboard templates, with functionality from SAP BusinessObjects Xcelsius and Web Intelligence, aligned with the major categories of reporting requirements.
