Amazon adds monitoring, scaling features to EC2
Amazon.com launched a public beta of new services on Monday that makes it easier to monitor and scale its popular Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
Amazon's CloudWatch service monitors Amazon Web Services' (AWS) assets, the company said. It gives customers that use the company's on-demand infrastructure a clear visibility into how their resources are being used, their operational performance and demand patterns.
A new auto scaling feature lets the users add or take away capacity as needed. And Elastic Load Balancing distributes incoming traffic across multiple EC2 instances.
Intel's $1.45 billion fine tarnishes image
Some IT pros agree that the $1.45 billion fine that the European Union gave Intel could soil the company's reputation.
Between 2002 and 2007, the European Commission (EC) for competition policy found that Intel had used anticompetitive practices to capture at least 70% of the x86 server CPU market worldwide, according to SearchDataCenter.com.
Intel Corp. has apparently provided computer manufacturers with rebates that allowed the manufacturers to buy almost all of their x86 CPUs from Intel. Direct payments to major retailers were given if they would sell computers only with Intel x86 CPUs. Under these agreements, manufacturers were also told to delay the launch of competitors' products that had x86 CPUs.
Intel's $1.45 billion fine is the largest penalty yet to be incurred in an antitrust case.
