Another Google gotcha

The once invincible-seeming Google had a very bad day Thursday. The company's news, Gmail and search services were unavailable to millions of people for hours. A routing error sent traffic through Asia, triggering a bottleneck, according to a blog post by Urs Hoelzle, senior vice president of operations for Google.

"As a result, about 14% of our users experienced slow services or even interruptions. We've been working hard to make our services ultrafast and 'always on,' so it's especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens. We're very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we'll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won't happen again," Hoelzle wrote.

The snafu is indeed embarrassing for Google, which is trying gain credibility inside business accounts. It has been pushing beyond ad-supported freebie mail and search services into paid applications and search appliances for use inside corporate firewalls.

Glitches like this could damage not only Google, but also the cloud computing push by many tech vendors, including Amazon, Microsoft and IBM. Many are already wary about trusting their data and applications to resources beyond their walls.

Tech Data launches stimulus spending tracker for VARs

Tech Data Corp. says its new Economic Stimulus Watch will help resellers track the billions of dollars in IT spending that was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The resource center will aggregate and list daily developments for affiliated VARs. It will also act as a forum for VARs to post questions and comments and talk with Tech Data systems engineers and credit specialists.

The Economic Stimulus Watch will also host live and virtual online events. Industry experts will discuss the impact ARRA is having in the channel and how resellers can capitalize on this opportunity
