New SQL Server 2010 name announced at TechEd

The next major release of SQL Server will be called SQL Server 2008 R2 instead of the previously planned name SQL Server 2010, otherwise known as Kilimanjaro.

The SQL Server 2008 R2 preview will be released to the community during the second half of 2009, according to SearchSQLServer.com. It will feature new data management services and additional logical processor support. The data services will be provided by Stratature, a data management company that Microsoft acquired in 2007. The number of logical processors to be included in the product has increased from 64 to 256.

CA upgrades 143 (yes, 143!) mainframe products

CA execs hope that upgrading its Mainframe 2.0 initiative will improve usability and allow for easier software deployments.

The company announced this week that 143 of 166 mainframe products will be updated and available by the end of this month, according to SearchDataCenter.com.

For experienced CA mainframe software users, installation time for a particular group of software products was cut from 30 minutes to five minutes, according to Christopher O'Malley, head of CA's mainframe business unit. He also claimed that installation time for a novice went from 2.5 hours to seven minutes.
