Interest grows in XenServer vs. VMware, Hyper-V

LAS VEGAS -- Although VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V grab the bulk of attention in server virtualization, now there's growing evidence that more IT shops are giving Citrix's XenServer a serious look.

At Synergy 2009 here this week, IT managers and partners said they see surging interest in XenServer, the hypervisor that Citrix acquired when it bought XenSource in late 2007. Current Citrix accounts are mainly businesses that use Citrix' XenApp application virtualization. And, XenApp gives Citrix a foot in the door, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.

EMC fights -- hard -- to stop Donatelli defection

Storage giant EMC isn't taking the departure of company veteran David Donatelli lying down. It sued to put the kibosh on the move and a Massachusetts judge has granted a preliminary injunction in the matter, according to the Channel Marker blog.

Donatelli was most recently president of EMC's storage division, a post he held from September 2007, but had served in a variety of roles at the company overseeing development of the EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON lines of networked storage systems as well as the Celerra network-attached storage (NAS) systems. He is also credited with overseeing EMC's strategic acquisitions of Data General, Softworks and CrosStor Software.

At HP he is to report to Ann Livermore, executive vice president of the Technology Solutions Group. He will oversee servers, storage and networking products.

IBM discovers, buys, data discovery vendor

IBM bought the assets of Exeros Inc., a data discovery vendor, the company said Tuesday. Exeros software automates the process of discovering relationships between disparate databases and applications.

The technology from Exeros Inc., a privately-held firm based in Santa Clara, Calif., will be integrated with IBM's Information Agenda portfolio to help companies better understand relationships between business entities, like customers and products, IBM told SearchDataManagement.com.
