Microsoft posts Windows 7
Microsoft made Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) available to select users on Friday.
MSDN and TechNet subscribers can download the code now; the rest of the world will be able to access it from the Microsoft website on May 5, Microsoft said. New features in this release include remote media streaming -- which should let users securely access and play digital media from a remote Windows 7-based PC and Windows XP mode, which would let users continue to run "many" Windows XP applications from the Windows 7 desktop. That capability will be available with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions.
The consensus estimate for Windows 7 broad availability in final form is 2010.
VC dough for Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus Systems, a cloud technology startup based on work out of the University California, Santa Barbara, said last week it garnered $5.5 million in venture capital funding.
The company says its technology will make it easier for VARs or developers to deploy, provision and manage cloud-based systems that run both inside corporate data centers and in the Amazon EC2 cloud.
"We support the popular APIs including the [Amazon Web Services] API, so you can move between the Amazon public cloud and your own data center," said Rich Wolski, CTO of Eucalyptus. The company will also use open source Appscale software to emulate Google's app engine "so we can look like Google and Amazon at the same time. That will never happen in the wild," Wolski told SearchITChannel.com.
The company is looking at Sun Microsystems' Sun cloud API as well. "It looks very fully featured and applicable for more larger-scale enterprise quality deployments. You can have 20 VMs running inside Amazon, [and] Sun will more likely support 2,000 [virtual machines]," Wolski said.
The funding, the company's first after an initial angel round of investment, comes from Benchmark Capital and BV Capital.
