Microsoft bolsters System Center; Trend Micro re-arms

Microsoft System Center will boost IT process automation
Microsoft on Wednesday said System Center Service Manager beta 2, due this fall, will offer a self-service portal along with incident, problem and change management capabilities. It will also include connectors to other products in the Microsoft management suite -- Operations Manager, Configuration Manager, and Active Directory -- that let IT administrators create CMDBs. The plans were disclosed at the annual Microsoft Management Summit 2009, according to SearchWindowsServer.com.

Trend Micro to acquire Third Brigade

Trend Micro Inc. said Wednesday it will buy Third Brigade Inc., a maker of host intrusion detection/prevention and application security appliances. The deal will add virtualization and cloud computing security to Trend Micro's portfolio, according to SearchSecurity.com. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, should close this summer.

Legacy AS/400 meets the future of IBM i at COMMON 2009

The push-pull of old versus new IBM technologies was an underlying theme at this week's COMMON users group show. Speaker Trevor Perry's recent assertion that IBM's marketing of "the i" could kill the system set the stage for the discussion, according to the iSeries blog. Future-looking products at the show included the Zend PHP Server, which puts IBM's DB2/400 database on the Web.
