HP's new server-and-storage chief gets networking too

HP names new server and storage veep

Hewlett-Packard tapped David Donatelli, former president of EMC's storage division, to head HP's server, storage and networking group.

As executive vice president of HP's enterprise storage and server (ESS) business unit, Donatelli will be responsible for industry standard servers, the StorageWorks line, infrastructure software, blades as well as HP's ProCurve Networking business. Marius Haas, senior vice president and worldwide general manager of HP ProCurve will report to Donatelli. Putting networking into ESS reflects a growing trend of convergence of networking and computing servers.

Donatelli replaces Scott Stallard, who is retiring after 34 years at HP. Donatelli starts May 5 and will report to Ann Livermore, executive vice president of HP's Technology Solutions Group.

Microsoft to bring Linux, Unix into system center fold

After being slammed by IT managers for selling systems management software that just does Windows, Microsoft this week said that the next release of Systems Center Operations Manager will feature native Linux and Unix support.

Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, announced this week at the annual Microsoft Management Summit 2009 in Las Vegas, will be available later this quarter, according to SearchWindowsServer.com. Microsoft did not disclose pricing.

CA releases new Recovery Management

CA Inc. has added Recovery Management 12.5, which includes ARCserve backup, XOsoft High Availability and XOsoft Replication, to its data backup and replication products.

One customer said that ARCserve's data deduplication ability is the most exciting new addition in 12.5. The new dedupe has reduced the amount of data he backs up every night by 30%.
