IT channel news for April 14, 2009

Microsoft spells out XP support going forward

As of April 14, Microsoft will continue to support its venerable Windows XP operating system, albeit in a different manner, until April 8, 2014, the company said.

Windows XP, launched in 2001 and still widely deployed, now moves from mainstream to extended support. Going forward, Microsoft will keep supplying free security patches via Windows Update. Customers with XP preloaded onto their PCs can also get support from their hardware maker per the OEM support policy in force when they bought their computer.

What changes as of this week is that Microsoft will shift some of the support burden to paid per-incident phone and Web support for all customers. Premier customers will still get free hotfixes via the Extended Hotfix Support program, Microsoft said.

Autodesk recreates Partner Portal

Autodesk Inc.'s new Partner Portal will replace the company's existing One Team Web and aims to help partners increase sales of Autodesk's 2D and 3D design and engineering software.

The portal includes a Sales and Marketing Tools Finder, an Events Publisher tool and customization tools for user access, preferences and personal information. It also serves as a gateway to the Worldwide Autodesk Learning Central and the Partner Center opportunity management, ordering and support systems.

The new Partner Portal services are free. Autodesk partners can watch an overview demo of the new resource on the One Team Web website.
