Dell buys Allin for Microsoft services

Deepening its Microsoft consulting services bench, Dell Inc. bought Allin Corp's services business for $12 million in stock, the companies said Friday.

Pittsburgh-based Allin specializes in Microsoft core infrastructure technology and business management software and related services. About 100 Allin employees working in its Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Jose, and Walnut Creek, Calif. offices will join Dell's services business.

HP puts the touch on business PCs

Hewlett-Packard Co. this week announced touch-enabled desktop PCs for businesses. The unit, which HP terms an "all-in-one" PC, combines hardware and monitor to save space and comes loaded with Windows Vista Business 64, Intel Core 2 Dual P8400 CPU, four gigabytes of memory, and a 320-gigabyte hard drive. HP already fields an analogous HP TouchSmart PC for consumers.

Good news in UC?

As tech budgets tighten in 2009, unified communications (UC) deployments that focus on productivity-boosting features and cutting costs-- things like contact center automation and collaboration could sell, according to SearchUnifiedCommunications.com. Overall, communications spending is expected to slow next year, according to Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst at Infonetics Research. But, he believes the UC market will do relatively well because the tools help cut costs.
