Red Hat spawns Unix killer
Red Hat unveiled extended support that could help persuade IT managers to move
mission-critical applications to Linux from Unix, according to SearchEnterpriseLinux.com. Red Hat's Extended Update Support (EUS) option will let enterprises stay on the same minor release of RHEL for up to 18 months, up from just six months, in keeping with support policies of Unix distributions like IBM AIX and Sun Solaris.
Judge OKs Circuit City bankruptcy
Circuit City Stores Inc. received final approval on Monday for $1.1 billion in financing to keep running under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Huennekens approved the debtor-in-possession loans at a hearing in Circuit City's hometown, Richmond, Va. The financing replaces a $1.3 billion asset-backed loan the company had been using and will be used to stock inventory and make payroll.
Circuit City filed for bankruptcy protection in November. The company was under pressure from vendors at a time when consumer spending on electronics was falling.
Check Point to buy Nokia security appliance business
Check Point Software Technologies plans to acquire Nokia's security appliance business, according to SearchSecurity.com. Terms were not disclosed. Check Point entered the security appliance business last year with the introduction of a midmarket appliance. The company sells an enterprise-grade VPN-1 UTM appliance called Edge, which runs on third-party hardware from partners like Nokia, IBM and Crossbeam.
