Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2008.

MSPAlliance opens legal services hotline

The MSPAlliance, the International Association of Managed Service Providers, this week launched a legal services hotline to help MSPs avoid channel conflict. The hotline is in response to the "increasing predatory behavior contaminating the IT channel," MSPAlliance president Charles Weaver said. Dallas-based firm Scott and Scott LLP will staff the hotline, and initial calls will be free to MSPAlliance members and accredited vendors.

Virtual Exchange, SQL Server catch on

Interest is growing in virtualizing SQL Server, Exchange Server and other high-throughput applications, SearchWinIT.com reported yesterday. Previously, many believed that database and messaging servers were not suitable for virtualization because they needed more memory and CPU access. But now IT managers may in fact need virtualization as way to deal with more servers and larger workloads. In fact, in a SearchSQLServer.com survey, 26% of 372 database administrators and IT managers said they planned to manage their growing servers by running them in virtual machines.

Hyperic adds partners

Hyperic, a provider of Web application performance monitoring software, has added new partners to its roster. They include Openwater Solutions and Archer Systems in the United States, Innovative Digital in China, ICE Systems in Australia and Dalet in Europe.

Hyperic software, which can be "white-labeled" by VARs or systems integrators, monitors the performance of cloud computing environments. The San Francisco-based company launched its partner program earlier this year and announced Hyperic HQ 4.0 for the Amazon cloud environment last month.

The cloud rush is definitely on, with open source-oriented competitors like GroundWork and Zenoss also in the fray, even as CA and other legacy enterprise IT management vendors move in.
