Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008.

CA gets into SaaS

CA is staking a claim in the Software as a Service realm. At CA World this week, the company officially launched Instant Recovery On Demand, Clarity PPM (Project and Portfolio Management) On Demand and GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) Manager On Demand.

Given the company's roots in mainframe apps and utilities -- and the time-share model pioneered in that arena -- this news isn't as big a departure as it may seem. However, CA is relatively late into the SaaS sweepstakes. CA also announced new federated identity products at the Las Vegas show.

Microsoft lures startups with free development tools

Microsoft has launched a new program, BizSpark, that will give complete versions of the company's development tools to privately owned startups, according to SearchWinDevelopment.com. Participating companies, which must earn less than $1 million, will receive Visual Studio Team System, an MSDN Premium Subscription and unlimited licenses of Microsoft's servers -- including Windows Server, SQL Server, BizTalk and SharePoint. Users can employ servers for hosting SaaS, and BizSpark can also connect them with free hosting partners. Microsoft is aiming to encourage more developers to write for its platforms by lowering the cost of entry.

Symantec hosts data center management

Symantec launched a cloud-based management service for the data center this week. Veritas Operations Services is an online services platform that identifies vulnerabilities in data centers and lets enterprises do preventative maintenance. The first two tools available are Veritas Installation Assessment and Veritas Storage Foundation Health Check.

The tools can manage storage and server environments to help users identify and address risks earlier. Installation assessment is available now for $500 per physical server, and it's free for customers subscribed to Storage Foundation or Cluster Server maintenance.

Eubanks joins Perimeter eSecurity's board

Gordon Eubanks, the former CEO of Symantec and Oblix, is joining the board of Perimeter eSecurity, a security-on-demand specialist based in Milford, Conn. Eubanks' tenure at Symantec, during which he helped lead that company's software utilities and antivirus software push, could make him a good fit. Identity management software maker Oblix was sold to Oracle in 2005.
