Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008.

Yahoo, Symantec CEOs stepping down

Jerry Yang, Yahoo's embattled CEO and co-founder, is relinquishing his post. Yang will remain on the board and become Chief Yahoo once again. He has been in the hot seat for nearly a year since Microsoft launched, then pulled back, its $45 billion offer to acquire Yahoo. Yahoo has hired Heidrick and Struggles to find a new CEO.

The Yang news overshadowed Symantec's disclosure earlier Monday that CEO John W. Thompson is retiring next year. Thompson has held that post for 10 years, following 28 years at IBM. Symantec named chief operating officer Enrique Salem as new CEO -- a choice that may irk some VARs. In June, Salem provoked a firestorm when he told Wall Street analysts that Symantec's biggest customers could buy software direct from the company.

SEC accuses Cuban of insider trading

Mark Cuban, former VAR and current gazillionaire, is in hot water with the feds. The Securities and Exchange Commission filed an insider trading suit against Cuban yesterday, alleging that he dumped his shares in Mamma.com, an Internet search company, when he heard about a possible private offering that could depress its value. He owned a 6% stake, and his sale came just before share prices fell. Cuban denied the allegations on his widely read blog.

Cuban co-founded MicroSolutions, a large systems integrator that he sold to Compuserve. He then co-founded Broadcast.com, which he sold to Yahoo.

SAP, Business Objects offer ERP data migration

SAP is launching a set of enterprise resource planning (ERP) data migration tools in conjunction with Business Objects (an SAP company). The tools will let users analyze, manage and integrate legacy data into SAP ERP environments.

Using Business Objects' information management technology, customers can upgrade or replace legacy systems with SAP's ERP tools, without using outside programs. The goal is to ease the process of integrating information from disparate systems into one application, SAP said. The data migration system integrates data through a six-step process that includes analyzing, extracting and transforming, cleansing, validating, uploading and reconciling.

Trend Micro unveils Email Encryption Gateway

Trend Micro is getting into the email encryption market, according to Information Security magazine. The company yesterday announced its Email Encryption Gateway, which uses technology from Identum -- a United Kingdom-based company that Trend Micro acquired in February. The product will be available Dec. 1.

Microsoft developing cloud systems management

Microsoft is working on a management platform for cloud services, SearchWinIT.com reported yesterday.

In an exclusive interview with the website, Brad Anderson, general manager of Microsoft's management and solutions division, said: "We want to enable both on-premise and cloud. But think about Windows Update. That's a service that moves more bits and more data around the world every month than any other service. How can that infrastructure be extended to patching, asset management, monitoring and host protection? We're starting to put the pieces together as far as what is needed for online management."

Anderson also sounded off on Management as a Service -- or management of virtualized applications down to the desktop -- as well as online asset inventory management.
