Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Monday, Nov. 17, 2008.

CA bulks up identity and access management

CA is bolstering its identity and access management offering with CA Federation Manager. The product, which succeeds the product formerly known as CA SiteMinder Federation Security Services, aims to make it easier for VARs to deploy and manage federated partnerships. The product can act as the identity provider for the user, meaning that it is the user's home site, or the service provider, meaning it owns the target applications.

Also new from CA World 2008 in Las Vegas is CA SOA Security Manager. It provides an all-encompassing SOA and Web Services security platform that abstracts out security from the underlying services and provides identity-based Web services security -- including authentication, authorization, federation and auditing.

Tech Data adds wireless management, security

Tech Data is beefing up its wireless practice for partners by adding a line of security, network performance and compliance solutions called AirMagnet, the company announced Friday. The AirMagnet line includes seven tools that collect live signal and packet stream information, let partners model and plan 802.11n networks, analyze laptop connections, identify interference, monitor voice for both integrity and security purposes, address Cisco's unified wireless network performance and offer remote monitoring.

Tech Data is selling the product through its Wireless Special Business Unit, which offers partners a full wireless networking portfolio as well as a team that specializes in planning and implementing wireless networks.

Symantec completes MessageLabs buy

Symantec completed its MessageLabs acquisition Friday, the company said. Symantec plans to use MessageLabs to boost its Software as a Service platform, the Symantec Protection Network. The vendors announced the $695 million deal last month, and Symantec has said it plans to spend $1 billion a year on acquisitions for the foreseeable future.
