Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008.

HP, NetSuite become SaaS partners

Hewlett-Packard and NetSuite are teaming up to offer hosted business applications to SMBs. Under the partnership, announced today, HP's 15,000 VARs in the United States will be able to sell NetSuite's SaaS offerings through a joint HP-NetSuite referral program. Partners will also be able to supplement the hosted applications with additional services through the HP Total Care program. HP's servers and storage arrays will power the services -- which include CRM, ERP, e-commerce and accounting -- on the back end, the companies said.

Pesatori joins Sparxent board

Enrico Pesatori, a technology executive with more than 40 years of experience at Compaq Computer, Digital Equipment, Tandem Computing, Penguin Computing and BluArc, is now on the board of Sparxent, a startup IT solution provider.

"Enrico Pesatori is a well-respected senior-level executive [with] strong industry knowledge and an international perspective that is highly complementary to our overseas growth plans," Sparxent CEO Steve DeWindt said in a statement. Sparxent was founded in August to focus on integrated IT consulting and software development for midmarket companies.

IBM appliance takes on Microsoft SBS

IBM has announced its Lotus Foundations appliance -- a bundle of Lotus Notes/Domino, VMware and a 100-megabyte Linux kernel on an IBM System X server -- that the company says will "do Windows better than Microsoft." The appliance is promised for delivery in December, and IBM is signing up VARs to try the Lotus Foundations/VMware beta on its website.

The timing of Monday's announcement is no coincidence, because Microsoft is launching its latest Small Business Server this week. IBM says its appliance "addresses the headaches that SMBs have grown accustomed to with traditional IT solutions like Microsoft Small Business Server." The appliance will support up to 500 users.

New Cisco router for service providers

Cisco today launched a new edge router for service providers to handle Internet traffic that the company estimates will double every two years. Cisco says the ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router will have six times the capacity of competing products -- enough to deliver high-definition streams to every household in Los Angeles (1.2 million homes) simultaneously. The ASR 9000 comes in six- and 10-slot configurations, supporting 400 Gbps per slot. The router, which will likely replace the 7600 series systems, offers up to 6.4 Terabits per second of total capacity. The ASR 9000 starts at $80,000 and is already in testing among major service providers.

Avaya goes to all-in-one UC

Avaya this week launched an all-in-one unified communications (UC) package and new speech-to-text technology. Users of the new Avaya Communications Manager 5.0 Enterprise Edition will receive access to IP telephony software, a UC portal for conferencing and messaging, mobility technology, remote VPN and presence functions without having to license each feature individually.

Enterprises that are upgrading will receive the package free, and new customers can buy licenses for $50 per user. Avaya executives say customers can now easily add services as they need them, instead of coming back to the company to add functions at additional costs. The speech-to-text software lets users send voicemails as texts or emails to either mobile devices or PC applications in a fully secure stream.
