Microsoft gains on VMware

Microsoft Hyper-V had a strong debut in its first quarter, according to IDC. Hyper-V and its predecessor, Virtual Server 2005, garnered 23% of the new virtualization license market for the quarter. VMware, the longstanding market leader, took 44% of the market.

Rumored BlackBerry app store has room for partners

As the rumored BlackBerry app store draws closer to its launch date, reported to coincide with the launch of Research In Motion (RIM)'s first touch-screen phone, RIM insists it will continue to play nice with its biggest fans, the service providers, likely letting them set which apps -- and under what terms -- users can download and buy.

"We've established a very good channel strategy with our carriers, where they can choose the cream of the crop and integrate billing into their systems," said Tyler Lessard, RIM's director of ISV Alliances, according to SearchMobileComputing.com. Leaked images of the alleged BlackBerry Application Center, first posted on CrackBerry.com, show RIM sticking to this strategy: The application center will be more of a link repository, pointing users to applications and updates in a simple user interface while leaving the actual hosting to carriers

Sage honors top VARs

Sage Software's 2008 Business Partners of the Year include Blytheco LLC for ERP products; Infinity Info Systems Corp. for Sage customer relationship management (CRM); MIS Group for Sage construction and real estate solutions; NFP Consultants for nonprofit solutions; and Galaxy Technologies Inc. for employer solutions.

The honors are based on performance for Sage's fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, 2008. The overall Partner of the Year award winner will be announced Jan. 29, 2009, at the Sage Software President's Circle and Chairman's Club awards event in Kauai, Hawaii.
