Information technology (IT) channel news in brief for Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008.

Oracle offers national VAR program

Oracle has a new national VAR program to support resellers with national coverage. The program covers partners selling Oracle's database and middleware. Qualifying VARs get access to an Oracle national sales team, giving them a single contact for "joint delivery of Oracle-based technology, software products and services," according to a statement.

In the past, large VARs have had to keep track of many regional sales contacts at the company. The program mimics work done by Sun Microsystems to centralize national management of VARs.

Arrow, EMC start leasing program

Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions today launched a leasing program for its EMC resellers. Under the agreement with EMC, Arrow will help partners prepare financing quotes and shorten their cash flow cycles by about 20 days. Arrow said the program will also help resellers reduce their financial risk and increase their credit capacity.

Smartphone sales growth slows

Worldwide smartphone sales grew 15.7% over the second quarter of last year, but sales are increasing at a slower rate than they were in 2007, according to a Gartner report released Monday. Worldwide sales totaled 32.2 million, with the North American market experiencing 78.7% year-over-year growth, according to the report. Still, Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza remained cautionary, citing the economy's affect on consumer spending and increased competition from enhanced touch-screen phones.

"The current economic environment continues to negatively impact the market, limiting consumer spending and replacement purchases in general. In addition, smartphone sales slowed down as a result of new compelling touch technology mainly available on enhanced phones (based on proprietary operating systems) rather than smartphones."

Among smartphone players, Nokia took the lead in sales, holding 47.5% of the market, although its growth has been less than the market average. Research in Motion (RIM) took second place, taking 17.4% of the market share. RIM's sales were up 126% year over year. HTC came in third with 4.1% of the market.

Google Chrome brings goodies to corporate developers

A new JavaScript engine in Google's Chrome browser offers the enterprise architect new options for moving server-side functionality to the Web client. With the release of Chrome to beta this week, JavaScript is again being propelled to the forefront as a language for rich Internet application development, according to SearchSOA.com.

Foundry sides with Microsoft on virtualization

Foundry Networks will support Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V for enhanced virtualization capabilities, the switching and routing company announced Monday. With this move, Foundry is taking a direct stand against Cisco Systems, which has invested $150 million in VMware. Foundry's decision also highlights the mounting battle between Microsoft and VMware, as numerous networking players and others are beginning to choose sides.

Foundry's data center routers and switches will be interoperable with Microsoft's Hyper-V, enabling better network performance and reduced power and operational costs. Foundry is being acquired by storage equipment manufacturer Brocade, giving Brocade a complete networking portfolio comparable only to Cisco.
