Salesforce.com will be upgrading AppExchange, the online directory it uses to help sell third-party extensions to its service, the company announced yesterday. Starting in February, developers of such applications will be able to pay a percentage – either 10% or 25%, depending on the package they purchase – to access Salesforce.com's new AppStore. Developers currently pay a flat fee to be listed AppExchange, and that option will still be available.

In return for the steeper price, Salesforce.com will add marketing programs and inclusion in its events for the lower-tier program; and lead generation, seminars and higher listings in AppExchange for the more expensive program. Smaller developers may wish to take advantage of these services, whereas larger companies may be able to keep handle those needs in-house.

Applications listed on the site are written in Apex, Salesforce.com's programming platform. AppExchange currently lists about 430 such programs, which vie for the company's 27,000 customers.
