Avnet rolls out application-specific solutions for HP ConvergedSystems
On Dec. 9, just one day prior to HP Discover 2013 in Barcelona, Hewlett-Packard Co. announced its ConvergedSystem portfolio, which included four pre-configured, workload-optimized systems. This week, Avnet Technology Solutions announced two application solutions, Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments, for the HP ConvergedSystem portfolio.
Designed for channel partners in North America, the Avnet Exchange Server 2013 for HP ConvergedSystem is an integrated architecture that partners can use to deploy large messaging mailboxes to their customers. Similarly, Avnet’s VDI solution for HP ConvergedSystem enables partners to quickly deploy virtual desktop solutions to customers.
Avnet also makes available to partners its "Avnet Technical Army" for additional expertise.
Avnet to offer SanDisk flash storage
Avnet and SanDisk Corp. announced this week that the distributor will offer SanDisk flash-based hardware and software solutions worldwide, helping to expand the vendor’s commercial business channel to VARs, OEM developers, system integrators, system builders and direct market resellers.
According to Avnet, the available SanDisk products include solid-state solutions to enhance data center performance; client SSDs to boost PC and notebook speed, responsiveness and boot-up times; and SanDisk embedded flash storage solutions for commercial use.
IBM to acquire Aspera
Nine-year-old Aspera Inc., whose technology is designed to move massive amounts of data quickly, has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by IBM Corp.
Aspera’s high-speed transfer technology is licensed to partners and clients that need to overcome bottlenecks in data transfer over WANs. IBM sees Aspera’s solution as key to facilitating big data projects.
IBM stated its intentions to integrate Aspera’s fasp technology with recently acquired SoftLayer cloud infrastructure next year. According to the vendor, the acquisition of Aspera builds on IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative and also extends IBM's capabilities in managed file transfer.
IDC Research forecasts significant growth for big data and services
A new IDC study, titled "Worldwide Big Data Technology and Services 2013-2017," forecasts that the big data technology and services market will grow to $32.4 billion through 2017, a 27% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
Some research findings:
- Cloud infrastructure has the highest predicted CAGR, at 49% through 2017, compared with other market segments.
- Decision automation solutions based on big data technology will threaten the role of the knowledge worker.
- Revenue for traditional storage in the data center will shrink while cloud storage revenue will grow as data from big data projects are stored in the cloud.
ProMAX launches reseller channel
ProMAX Systems, a vendor offering multifunctional, high-performance shared storage servers and editing workstations for video, has launched a global reseller channel. The move follows the company's successful launch, in the fourth quarter of 2012, of its ProMAX Platform for shared storage and the more recent release of the New Platform Series models.
Positioning the Platform servers as an enterprise-class solution, the vendor is seeking resellers to help grow its product line, the company announced this week.
The Platform servers are aimed at users in media and entertainment; higher education; professional sports teams, stadiums and arenas; faith-based organizations; and government, according to the company.
