Microsoft readies release of SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers May 3 and will be available worldwide ten days later.

Company execs, on a call Tuesday, and some hand-picked beta testers touted the product's enhanced business intelligence features, including the PowerPivot analytics tool and new centralized management.

The company is also readying the second Community Technical Preview of the Parallel Data Warehouse Edition and is working to add more SQL Server features and functions to the cloud-based SQL Azure.

Symantec adds new programs, incentives to partner program

Symantec Corp. performed a face-lift on its Hosted Services partner program this week to make its hosted security applications more accessible to resellers.

Partners in the Associate Program can earn commissions on new contracts and on upgrades. VARs in the Hosted Applications Provider Program can integrate Symantec hosted security services with other hosted applications.

Under the Premium Associate and Associate programs, partners can earn 15% commission on new business and upgrades. The entry-level Authorized Reseller Program offers a 20% margin, with all customer support handled by Symantec Hosted Services.

This news comes just weeks after Symantec's layoffs that kicked off the company's new fiscal year.
