Tech Data and TechTurn are partnering to help VARs recycle customer IT gear

easily and efficiently. The service, available via Tech Data Corp.'s TDonCall services offering, gives customers easy, efficient and environmentally correct ways to get rid of IT gear from laptops to servers and displays. The recycling services are available via TechData's TDonCall services team.

VMware's new backup wins praise, questions

VMware users and VARs were not enamored of VMware Consolidated Backup or VCB, a backup framework that comes with Virtual Infrastructure 3. Newer backup software written directly to vSphere 4's new vStorage APIs promises faster backup, better scalability and easier installs. However, backup in this new scenario does require a dedicated Windows server, which some VMware customers see as ironic.

IBM updates Cognos BI

IBM has enhanced Cognos corporate performance management software by adding prebuilt financial models.

New to the offering is better financial scenario-testing in Cognos TM1 software and budget consolidation capabilities in Cognos 8 Controller. IBM Cognos Performance Blueprints include product profitability and demand planning models and an underwriting dashboard for insurance executives.

IBM hopes to woo CFOs and other financial professionals to move from spreadsheets and manual budgeting to its automated software.
