The best approach for SMB backup environments is the one that is the most applicable to meet the needs of the specific environment. So in other words, it depends upon how much data needs to be backed up, what the recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) are for a given business. It will also depend upon what skill set and existing technology an environment has along with preferences ranging from outsourcing all backup and recovery functions to setting up multi-site self managed backups among other options.

An important question to consider is that most business are not in the business of performing backups so with that in mind, is it more cost effective to employ some type of managed service for backup balancing cost with effective service and business continuance capabilities.
